Salient features

  1. Bacillus thuringiensis serotype israelensis (Bti) is a group of bacteria used as biological control agents for larvae stages of certain dipterans.

  2. Bti produces toxins which are effective in killing various species of mosquito larvae in ponds or black fly larvae with highly targeted efficiency and it has no effect on other insects, plants, mammals or humans.

  3. Bti is used to kill developing mosquito larvae by being applied to standing water where those larvae are found. Bti can also be sprayed over waterbodies such as ponds, lakes, rivers and streams.

  4. Bti can be used around homes and in areas and containers where water can collect such as flower pots, unused tyres, and bird baths etc.

  5. The use of Bti on control of mosquitoe larvae has not resulted in development of resistence in host population.

  6. Bti is most effective when used as part of an integrated mosquito management plan for reducing the mosquitoe population in an area.

Mode of action

  1. Bti produces delta- endotoxin spores. It acts on midgut epithelium causing disintegration of gut wall, cessation of feeding activity, starvation and leakage of gut contents into haemolymph and body cavity of larvae leading to general paralysis of larval body. The spores germinate and multiply in larval gut and body causing septicemia and the larva starves to death.
